Fake use of ‘Framestore’ company credentials

Framestore are a legitimate business but they are having their credentials used by a fraudster trying to pass himself off as an ex employee called Alex Webster.

The real Mr Webster has nothing to do with this and neither does the real Framestore.

The usual trick has been employed of registering a similar domain to the legitimate one and sending emails from this.

In this case that is framestoreplc.com

Please be cautious if approached by someone purporting to be from this company. The legitimate Framestore can be found at www.framestore.com

If you have any further information regarding this please let us know using our contact form.

Fake purchase requests from ‘Nottingham University’.

Fraudsters using an email address of @nottingham-ac-uk.com rather than the correct format of ac.uk are emailing broadcast sales outlets trying to obtain goods.

This domain was purchased late last year and updated in Feb of this year.

There is a distinct likelihood that there will be other similar attempts so please examine the email addresses carefully of any requests of this nature.

You can use https://who.is to check registration details and dates.

Fake use of Bauer Media’s credentials

Fraudsters using a convincing but fake PO, purporting to be from Bauer Media, attempted to buy Sony A7s cameras.

Verification with the real Bauer Media’s accounts department quickly unearthed it as a fraudulent purchase.

The real Bauer Media are innocent victims of ID theft here but if you are approached with a purchase request, please verify it with the real company.

Fake Warner Brothers Request

We are now getting reports of fake kit hire requests for Warner Brothers.

Somebody purporting to be  Alex Bowers of Warner Brothers called and requested kit. He was asked to email in and did so using the email address alex.bowers@wmguk.co.uk which is not a valid email address.

Please note there is a genuine Alex working at Warner brothers and this is not him.

The hire company checked with the real Alex who confirmed it was not him and must be a scam.

Fake Alex provided the following details – spelling licensing incorrectly.

Alex Bowers
International Licencing Manager
Warner Music UK
27 Wrights Lane, London W8 5SW, United Kingdom

T +44 207 368 2000
M +44 7377 720 377

We would advise treating all requests from unknown contacts at any major media company with extreme caution and verify who you are dealing with by phoning a publicly advertised number.

Based on previous bouts of this sort of fraud, they will run through lots of other companies too.

If you hear from fake Alex, please let us know.

Fake ITV requests

Several companies have reported this afternoon that they are getting suspect calls to request equipment from someone using the name Craig Walker, purporting to be from ITV but using a generic gmx email account.
‘Craig’ has a PO which he is sending out which looks very much like ITV paperwork. He is trying to hire DSLR cameras and lenses which are obviously highly saleable.
Please be vigilant and verify hires from unknown contacts at major broadcasters. When this style of fraud has happened before the perpetrators have moved between BBC, ITV and C4 with ease.

Sakaria Mohammed attempting to hire again.

We have been contacted by a London lighting company who had been approached by Sakaria Mohammed requesting to hire from them.

Mr Mohammed raised suspicions immediately with them because he did not appear to have any kind of understanding about what he was trying to hire. Then when he sent in a copy of his ID, it was, in their opinion, fake.

They then looked up his name and discovered via Xhire that he had stolen from another hire company.

Evidently he is still attempting to obtain goods and we would advise extreme caution in dealing with him.

Sakaria Abdallah Mohammed – theft by theft.

Mohaammed Abdallah Sakaria

Someone using the (possibly false) name of  Sakaria Abdallah Mohammed hired a large quantity of equipment from Darryl Wood in August 2019 and failed to return it.

He claimed that he himself had been robbed.

We are led to believe that the camera was sold way below its value to an individual who goes by the name B-Dot.

If you come across any of the following items or can assist in identifying any of these individuals, please contact Darryl at

smirror at internode dot on dot net or email us here at Xhire.

Note:  It is possible that Mr Mohammed was the victim of identity theft, and that the documents used were either forged or stolen.   Nothing  on this site should in any way be taken as indicative of the guilt or innocence, (or the involvement in fraudulent activity), of anyone whose details are published here.  There are other individuals with that name.  The image above was taken from the identity documents supplied by the hirer, and may or may not depict the person who rented the equipment.

Subsequent fraudulent hire attempt at Pro Centre

Only a few weeks after the previous fraudulent hire, thieves have once again targeted ProCentre on Friday 28th June.

Pro Centre took a call from  ‘Nick at ‘Prolighting’ late on Friday urgently needing

2x 5D (didn’t specify the mark) and

2x Canon 50mm, which they changed to 85mm mid conversation.

This sounded suspicious so they called Prolighting – who do have a Nick, but Nick was away on that day. The PO number that was offered for the booking was a nonsense number.

The police were called and a taxi from a legitimate taxi company arrived supposedly to collect the goods – the delivery was supposed to go to 41 Mare street  which is a previous  Prolighting address.

The telephone number used for the booking was 07746 168 798.

If you have any information that may be useful, please contact Rob at Pro Centre on 020 7729 8822

Pro Centre

On Monday 10th June. 2019 at 1430 Pro Centre received a visit from a well prepared and knowledgeable thief who made off with over £10,000 of kit.

The thieves used another company’s details – Gripvan (who are not at all involved).

1)      On Friday they called ahead and identified themselves as Joe from Gripvan and in a self-assured  manner booked 2x 1DX mkII, 2x 70-200mm, 2x 50mm 1.2 –  offering a current GripVan PO number as confirmation.

2)      On Monday a driver arrived in a what we now know to be an older and since replaced style of Gripvan T-Shirt quoting the job number, presenting a PDA with collection information detailing the kit and GripVan’s address and then patiently waited for the kit be brought out. He was calm, collected and did nothing to arouse suspicion.

3)      He then left on foot,  CCTV loses them about 30 meters from the front door.

The items stolen were:

Canon 1DX MKII – #063012000498

Canon 1DX MKII – #1530160000095

Canon 70-200 MKIII – #6800003218

Canon 70-200 MIII – #6700002288

Canon 50mm 1.2 – #9730590

Canon 50mm 1.2 – #4362534

Below are images of the person who collected.

If you have any information regarding the whereabouts of these items or the person who collected, please contact Rob at Pro Centre on rob@procentre.co.uk

S Rizvi

A person identifying himself (probably falsely) as S Rizvi  failed to return equipment to Run TV and has been contacting other facilities houses, attempting to hire the same kit of 5D Cameras and EF lenses.

We would advise anybody who is contacted by Mr Rizvi to contact Frances at Run TV on 0207 636 0006

Important note:  It is entirely possible that ‘S Rizvi’ is a pseudonym, or that the real Mr Rizvi has been the victim of identity theft.  Nothing  on this site should in any way be taken as indicative of the guilt or innocence, (or the involvement in fraudulent activity), of anyone whose details are published here.  There are other individuals with that name, but this has NOTHING WHATEVER TO DO WITH ANYONE OTHER THAN THE PERSON PICTURED HERE.

VMI Burglary

VMI had a ‘Mission Impossible’ – style break in over the weekend by burglars making their way over the railway lines and subsequently entering their building through the roof.  Happily, the systems activated the alarm and the police and the loss was relatively small and many big expensive cameras and lenses were not stolen.

This is not yet a comprehensive list but please be aware in case you are offered any of these for sale.  It is highly likely that some DSLR lenses were also stolen but this is not yet confirmed.

Michael Banfield Jailed

We are just a little bit delighted to report that one of the most prolific sources of fraud in our industry has, courtesy of the City of London Police’s investigation, been jailed for seven and a half years.

This conviction would not have happened without the information gathered and shared by X-hire members.

It’s plainly and simply just great, great news.

More on this case from the City of London Police, here:  http://news.cityoflondon.police.uk/r/1064/multi-million_pound_international_film_industry_f

Multi-million pound international film industry fraud sees men sentenced to more than seven years
London man sentenced to seven and a half years for committing £2.1 million fraud after stealing equipment from companies working in the film industry
City of London Police’s Fraud Squad investigation uncovered crimes spanning eight countries and nine companies
Accomplice Jamie Jackson was sentenced to a 12 month suspended sentence on 5 July 2018
A London man was sentenced to seven and a half years on Friday 6 July 2018 at Southwark Crown Court for committing fraud by false representation after attempting to steal equipment across eight countries from nine companies working in the film industry.

The case was originally taken on by the former London Regional Fraud Team and passed to the City of London Police’s Fraud Squad in March 2017. The Fraud Squad’s investigation into Michael Banfield, of Buchanan Gardens, Kensal Green, London, found that he had been instrumental in taking £2.1 million worth of equipment from hire companies between June and November 2014.

The complex fraud involved a network of shell companies and fraudulently using legitimate company details to obtain filming equipment which was never returned.

An accomplice, Jamie Jackson, 28, of Wigram Way, Stevenage was sentenced to a 12 month suspended sentence on 5 July 2018 for his part as a courier of the equipment.

The three companies

Between June and December 2014, Banfield used the identities of three companies to obtain equipment from the nine victim companies.

One of the company identities used in the fraud was registered as a limited company in September 2013 and dissolved in May 2015. Banfield was unsuccessful in his attempt to obtain equipment when he contacted one filming equipment hire company using this limited company’s name.

The second company identity, used by Banfield between June and July 2014, was a legitimate company; its owners and staff had no part in his crimes. However, Banfield used the company’s identity and false names to contact the victim’s directly to hire equipment.

A third company name, World Wide Broadcast Solutions Ltd (WWBS) was registered as a limited company in January 2014.

How did it work?

In order to give the companies legitimacy, Banfield falsely obtained insurance documentation and provided false names using fraudulent identity documents. He also used pay as you go mobile phones without named subscribers to contact victims and used stolen bank card information. He then assisted in providing this false information to couriers and transported them to airports before they attended the victim’s premises.

Banfield successfully collected film hire equipment from companies based in the UK, South Africa, Canada and the USA, and subsequently failed to return it. He then assisted in the attempt to sell the equipment online using the WWBS company name. At least 15 items were advertised for sale online during August 2014 and one sale is known to have been successful. The equipment taken from the victim companies has never been found.

The fraud unravels

On 28 April 2015, a search was carried out at Banfield’s home address during which paperwork and mobile phones were seized. Evidence identified that a storage unit was used to store the stolen equipment, which had been set up by Banfield, using an alias to do so. A bank account in the name of this alias was registered at Banfield’s home and the telephone number linked to the bank account was attributed to Banfield. He attended a voluntary interview at Bishopsgate Police Station in the City on 11 May 2015.

The accomplice, Jamie Jackson, acted as a courier for the stolen equipment in one of the offences in November 2014. Jackson was arrested and searched on 5 November 2015 at the premises of one of the victim companies where he was attempting to collect equipment on behalf of WWBS. A mobile phone was seized which contained a text message referring to the collection of the equipment and to WWBS. A business card for WWBS was also seized.

Detective Constable Daniel Ward of the City of London Police’s Fraud Squad said: “The global scale of the investigation, along with the significant losses, false identification and frequent use of unregistered mobile phones by the suspects made this a complex case to investigate.

“The sentence received by Banfield today shows the severity with which we treat these offences; it should act as a warning to those looking to commit fraud that they will be caught, no matter how far their crimes spread.”

Stolen Kit – Peer to Peer Rental

The following kit has been stolen from a renter using a peer to peer rental website.

We advise against using P2P sites.  You might make a few pounds renting out your kit, but users are generally not properly vetted, and there is a serious risk you will lose everything, as happened below:

Name used: Jemima Morakinyo (Note:  This may be a pseudonym, or the identity documents of an innocent person with that name may have been used.)

Police details and crime number: 0311096/18

The kit was hired out through a peer to peer rental site called motion tribe.

Users sign up with their ID and their information and then all insurance and payments are made through the company.

An enquiry was made for my kit which seemed legitimate. However, as all the details are through the company I was unable to verify personally. You have to trust the security procedures of the business.

When they came to pick up the kit they seemed to not fully know about the settings which seemed dodgy but the rental terms had already been agreed, and they had already paid the company for use of the camera.

Of course, once the hire was made the person stopped replying to email and text messages and the kit hasn’t been delivered back.

Emmanuel Oladipo Olamide Sonowo

snapshot-2The gentleman above, using several variations on the above name was arrested on the 1st November in relation to a spate of fraudulent hires.

Mr Sonowo seems to have been keen on the theft by theft method, whereby he claims the equipment has been stolen on its way back to the hire company.

Mr Sonowo was born in 1989 and is from the London area.

Mr Sonowo also seems to claim a working relationship with a gentleman  using the name of Sinclair Malcolm.  (Possibly a pseudonym).  ‘Mr Malcolm’ was used as a referee for Mr Sonowo.

Fake BBC hirer alert!

A hire company have been approached by a gentleman using the name David Jones, allegedly of BBC Studioworks. He quoted a genuine BBC contact number but when the number was called to check, they had nobody there by that name.

The email address he used was not a legitimate BBC address but a generic free email account with BBC before the @ sign rather than after and he was attempting to order the equipment in a rush for immediate delivery.

This name – David Jones has been used before in 2012 to obtain goods under the guise of being BBC staff and other broadcasters were also impersonated around this time.

Please put your hire desks on alert, to ensure that any requests from major broadcasters, from unfamiliar contacts, are checked out thoroughly before any kit is delivered to them.

Stolen kit recovered – Xhire success story

In September 2014, Sven Joukes asked Xhire to list some stolen kit which had been stolen from him by a bogus film maker:   http://www.xhire.org.uk/?p=519

The kit was later advertised on Gumtree, and a sharp eyed member of the public spotted it, and checked whether it was stolen on Google.  He then notified Sven, who notified the Police.  Unusually, the Met (Charing Cross Police Station) took action immediately, and the kit was recovered the next day, and the seller was arrested.

Yesterday, after a long bureaucratic process, Sven was reunited with his lenses.

According to Sven,

“It has been quite a ride, but it’s great to know that the production community is actually very caring when it comes to this sort of stuff. I can only say I hope that everyone is as vigilant and active as the 2 people who contacted me in the first place and laid the foundation for solving this crime.

Thanks to you as well for running the site!”

Please remember to list all stolen kit with us, Azule and PLASA, as there is always a chance that somebody might spot it.

New stolen kit register

Azule Finance have created a new register for stolen kit.  You can check their database and list items here:  http://www.azule.co.uk/report-stolen-kit/

Please list stolen kit with Xhire as well, as the more places it’s listed, the more likely it is to be picked up by Google.

Kit stolen from hirer

Kit rented by Video Europe to James John Media, then stolen by their ‘client who commissioned a shoot.  (Note:  James John Media are in no way responsible for the theft.)

This is becoming an increasingly common method for stealing kit: Commission a cameraman to create a film, drive him to a location, and then separate him from the kit by trick.

In this case, James John’s cameraman / videographer was picked up from his home in Reading on 17 December 2015, in a Red Transporter Taxi  and then driven to Video Europe’s office to collect the kit.

They then travelled to a café location, en route collecting a camera assistant. When they arrived at the location, the kit was left in the cab with the driver. The camera assistant popped out for a cigarette. 5 mins later our client went out to see where the assistant was to find the assistant and the taxi gone.

He has been trying to get hold of his client but the phone is off. As of now it appears that the kit has been stolen.

Fraudster arrested after attempted impersonation

Good news:  An attempted fraud has been thwarted and the perpetrator arrested, as a result of a simple check by someone who was asked to release equipment.

Here, in brief, is what happened.

  1. Someone impersonating James Miller, a film maker, emailed Varavon, a video equipment manufacturer, using a fake email address, (jamesmillerdop@yahoo.com) requesting that they release some film equipment for review.
  2. Vavaron agreed, and requested that a London based company, Camera Kings London, supply the products to James Miller.
  3. An employee at Camera Kings texted James Miller using the number on his Vimeo page, and was told that no such review had been requested.
  4. Camera Kings contacted the Police, who set up a sting operation, and when the thief came to collect the kit, bearing a forged driving licence, he was arrested.

Three things worth noting here:

  1. The theft was prevented because someone decided to carry out a simple check which might have taken no more than 5 minutes.
  2. The Police, when offered the prospect of a nice easy arrest and conviction, were more than willing to co-operate.
  3. The fraudsters gathered all the information they needed to be convincing from online sources.

Although it has been quiet recently, the fraudsters haven’t gone away, so the rental community needs to remain vigilant.

Fraudulent Hire – Reel Nice

The production company Reel Nice have been victims of a fraudulent hire.

The goods were hired by a man using the name Oliver Woodbridge – although this is believed to be false.

The goods hired and not returned are as follows:

Piece Serial Number
Canon C300 EF Mount 533470700155
Canon 16-35mm f2.8 9710414
Canon 24-70mm f2.8 213407311
Canon 50mm f1.4 52107930
Canon 70-200mm f2.8 Old model.

There was also a boom mic.

The goods were in a  fairly distinctive Crumpler Sinking Barge camera bag – like this one.
